74th House District nominee Michael Gage (R) held a Town Hall meeting last night at the North Park Library off of Parham Road. This was an open topic discussion and Gage fielded a wide variety of topics from the diverse crowd.

Gage began by introducing himself and had the attendees do the same. He then gave a brief synopsis of his personal life, introducing his wife, Karen Gage, and the various business ventures that have honed his skills and shaped his views. He is now a small business owner and is very much attuned to his community and his constituents.

First of all, Michael Gage is a pragmatic optimist. His comments and answers to the various questions show his approach, in light of the current $6.5 billion shortfall facing the Commonwealth, to be on the realistic side of “things are improving”. He is under no delusion about the dire financial situation of the state, and admits hard choices will be necessary to fix the financial mess we are in. But at the same time, his priority for education, transportation and public safety are encouraging. He is willing to take a hard look at the entire picture of mandatory services the state must provide and willing to work hard to fund the parts that work, but he is not afraid to question the need for money spent on services that are doing no good at all. Where cuts need to be made, Gage is willing to balance need and cost to provide the essential services to the 74th and the state.

Gage addressed questions from the audience about bus transportation, GRTC and the selection of routes. He advocates fostering regional cooperation to effect savings and efficiency, and is open to allowing more citizen input into the processes. Who better to define the problem?

Gage is not satisfied with the predatory lending practices of the “Payday Loan” outlets, and believes that more needs to be done to limit the harm, especially to the financially disadvantaged and minorities. He favors revisiting the issue and working for a solution that is fair to all parties. He acknowledges the importance of encouraging businesses, especially small businesses, but admits solutions must be found to protect the citizens of the Commonwealth.

By the end of the meeting, which went over the scheduled time by 30 minutes, Michael Gage had impressed everyone in the room with his ready command of the issues. Even topics that were outside of the normal scope of a State Delegate were discussed and given the attention each questioner was seeking. Michael’s feeling is that if the issue is important to you, it is important to him. So often we see politicians dodge tough questions and avoid complete answers for political reasons.

Not Michael Gage. His honesty and openness will be a refreshing change from the politics as usual that citizens of the 74th district have been subjected to for so long. Michael Gage will truly be a representative for all of the people of the 74th district.
